Oceanside Repeaters
VE7RFR on Little Mountain is also a relatively easy target for handhelds in Oceanside because of the 600ft elevation of the repeater. Bare in mind when using this repeater that it is linked into the Nanaimo repeater system and then down to Victoria.
When it’s working properly, the Mount Cokely repeater, VE7RBB is an awesome addition to the Oceanside HAM’s tool chest. At an elevation of over 5000 feet ASL, coverage is excellent throughout Oceanside, although handhelds with line-of-site limitations are known to have problems.
As of June, 2023 a remote, linked station to VE7RBB has been added on Mt Benson, just to the north of Nanaimo. This will greatly increase VE7RBB’s range both to the south and east of Oceanside. The remote operates simplex on a frequency of 146.540MHz with a 100.0 Hz access tone. Note, because this remote operates in simplex mode, it is possible with multiple stations using it, that stations transmitting on the frequency can ‘block’ hearing output/responses from the RBB repeater. (The dreaded capture–effect common to FM radio 🙂 )

Other Repeaters Accessible From Oceanside
Oceanside is blessed by waterside proximity to mountain tops on both sides of the Salish Sea giving us excellent access to area repeaters. Of particular note, we have three good access points into the Island Trunk System, thereby giving our radios access to Port Hardy, Tofino, Ucluelet and Bamfield to the North and West, Powell River, the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver to the East and Nanaimo, Victoria, and Washington State to the South.
From Oceanside, the best Island Trunk System repeaters to use are VE7ITS on Mount Benson and VE7NIR on Mount Washington. Base stations will have no problem accessing either repeater while Handhelds will need full power and, even then location is everything.
Regardless, these repeaters open a world of friendly, interesting Nets outside MIRA’s Breakfast Bunch and Sunday Nets.
